Types Of Criminal Defense Lawyers

Hiring a criminal lawyer from a private practice is what a lot of people think of when they face charges of a DUI. Although a private practice offers a more personal setting and an attractive title, you are paying for these extra services.

Some offenders feel they will not be properly represented if they choose to have a lawyer appointed for them or if they have no other option than to use a professional Public Defender. If you don't have the funds to hire a lawyer from a private law firm, don't feel you are being cheated out of a good defense.

Public defenders and other appointed lawyers, in fact, may have some advantages over the more expensive option. The amount of information supplied to Public Defenders can be far greater than those from private practices, and they have many other lawyers in their building to consult with verses private practice lawyers. Public Defenders also typically have more experience in the courtroom due to the many people needing representation without the funds to pay for a private criminal lawyer.

With private practice lawyers, there are many fees required; some of these fees are not upfront and you may not realize they are there until it is too late. A criminal lawyer's fees typically vary depending on the offense you are being charged with, a more severe crime such as a felony would inevitably cause your fee to be higher than a misdemeanor would. If this is your first DUI offense, the cost would be less than one where you are facing extensive penalties. Extra fees may be needed if your case goes to trial; in which case, you should be aware of the extra cost and whether or not you can afford them.

Whether you choose to have a lawyer appointed to you or you retain one yourself, make sure you are comfortable with that lawyer. Just because a lawyer has been appointed for you doesn't mean you have to use them if you don't feel they are competent in handling your case. It is harder to convince a judge of a lawyer's incompetence if you are the one who retained that lawyer. Be aware that if the lawyer does in fact prove to be inept and you have done nothing toward acquiring a new defense than it is you who faces the punishment, not the lawyer.

If choosing a private practice lawyer is what you decide to do, make sure you know exactly what is expected of you in payment before signing into any agreement. You are paying for the amount of time and preparation it takes your lawyer to plead your case. When it comes to these private law firms, usually the higher the price you pay is higher the skills of the lawyer. Although, if you are going with a court appointed lawyer, the price you pay doesn't play a factor in how well you will be represented. Do not be discouraged if you cannot afford the high prices of a private criminal lawyer, you will be represented fairly by a Public Defender.
